Some very, very old drabble for you.

Word Count: 323
Prompt: Ash
sometimes, the ties that bind are as welcome as freedom.

"There was once a young boy who would visit Ecruteak on occasion," Morty whispered, voice barely audible over the heartfelt cheers of children parading past the walls of golden trees barricading the Bellchime Trail, "who had seen the legendary Ho-oh in flight." The bright auburn leaves crackled under his weight as he turned on his side, eyes passing slowly over the serenely reclined figure of the bird tamer, Falkner, eyes closed in relaxation and a small twig clutched between his teeth.

"I didn’t believe him at first, of course." He smiled at the memory. Ash, who was so full of spirit, claiming to have seen a Pokemon not sighted for hundreds of years, and not just any Pokemon, no; one that Morty willingly gave his life for.

Falkner opened his eyes, slowly, drowsily. The atmosphere in the secluded area was more peaceful than the narrow walkways of the Violet gym where he would usually spend his days thinking, and it had taken more effort than he would have liked not to fall asleep to the soothing sound of the other’s voice. "Were you jealous? I would have been." He raised his hands back behind his head and twirled the small brown twig with his tongue.

"I suppose I was, yes. It made me wonder, what if Ho-oh doesn’t want to return to Ecruteak?" Morty sat up and pulled his knees to his chest, watching the leaves dance along the ancient stone pathway. "If you were freed from such turmoil, free to go wherever you wish… would you come back?"

Falkner frowned and bit down on the end of the twig, snapping the thin wood with a loud crack. He huffed and turned away from the other, and spat the twig a short distance into a small pile of windswept leaves and dry dirt. "Why are you asking me?" Sharp, not quite a question. "Of course I’d come back, if you wanted me to."

Awww - there's obvious affection there; I love how you show it while still keeping them in-character! <3 Short and sweet, and very well-written. Thanks for sharing! :D
